I hope some of The Search for Piety and Obedience‘s faithful readers will see this post before this afternoon!
Today — Sunday, June 1 — is the annual Heritage Service sponsored by the Brethren in Christ Historical Society. This yearly event joins congregational singing and special messages as one way to celebrate the unique Brethren in Christ heritage. As in years passed, this year’s event will be held at the Ringgold Meeting House in Smithsburg, Maryland, one of the oldest Brethren in Christ houses of worship in the U.S.
As reported in the most recent Historical Society newsletter, this year’s Heritage Service will feature a program led by Dwight Thomas, a scholar of the Brethren in Christ and a long-time professor of music at Messiah College. The program — a combination of congregational singing and historical reflection — will trace some of the significant developments in Brethren in Christ hymnody through the years. (It will be similar to the event Dr. Thomas put together for my course on Brethren in Christ history and theology earlier this year.)
The Heritage Service begins at 3pm. I’ll be in attendance, offering photos and updates via The Search for Piety and Obedience Facebook page. I hope to see you there!
