Can Anyone Identify These Photos?

Just a few of the photographs that members of the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church are looking to identify before their centennial observance on November 14. Do you know any of the individuals pictured here? (Click on the pictures for more images.)

Following up on last week’s post about Elizabethtown (Pa.) Brethren in Christ Church’s upcoming centennial observance: Can anyone identify the people or events depicted in either of these sets of photographs?

The sets are posted on the Elizabethtown church’s Facebook page; the first dates to the years before 1978, the second to the 1980s and 1990s. A few have been tagged by Facebook users, but many remain unidentified.

Can anyone familiar with this period of Brethren in Christ history help out?

  1. Devin,

Thank-you for spreading the word about this project! What a joy to celebrate the work of God through His people at a particular place.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run w/perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:1-2

  2. You’re teasing, right?
Photo # 1–I am drawing a blank; the name just won’t come.
Photo # 2 is the William Hoke family–Bill & Mary. Children: daughter –Anita; sons–Ken and ___. This looks like the standard missionary photo. The Hokes were missionaries to India.
Photo # 3 is Don Shafer, maybe in his office?

  3. Beth Mark says:

The bottom picture (man at desk) is Don Shafer.

I believe the top one is P.W. McBeth

  4. Devin Manzullo-Thomas says:

Donna: If by “teasing” you mean lobbing some softballs in order to draw people to ID the “harder” pictures in the larger galleries, then yes — I’m definitely teasing.

You’re right on both points. (The older Hoke son is named Carlton.) And the first picture shows Paul W. McBeth, father of David McBeth and one of the former pastors at Elizabethtown.

P.S. Please do check out the links to the galleries — you might know some folks in those shots, too!

  6. Well, I thought as much.
I was so frustrated that I couldn’t get my brain to pull out the name “Paul McBeth” that I even emailed my dad on photo # 1.
Anyway–of course I checked out the photo gallery. I am inveterately nosey.
